Ice Floes and Frost

Introduction

We are happy to announce that 20 years after the introduction of Read Up On It, our most unique and successful children's literature publication, the printed book and libraries continue to flourish. Reading is as popular as ever. Almost 18,000 teachers, librarians and parents subscribe to Read Up On It, the only bilingual, thematic bibliography which features Canadian authors and illustrators of children's books. With the launch of the 20th edition, we celebrate the birthday of a publication that has the power to spark a love of reading and a love of books among children and young people that can grow into a lifelong passion.

The world of books and libraries opens up an expanse of imaginative territory for children that cannot be charted by any map-as vast, mysterious and compelling as the polar landscape theme of this year's publication, Ice Floes and Frost. This is the first year we have brought the Library and Archives Canada Learning Centre into the project, helping to introduce children, their parents, and their teachers to outstanding Canadian authors, illustrators and books by fostering literacy, unleashing curiosity, and nurturing creativity.

Over the years Read Up On It, first introduced by the National Library of Canada in 1988, has shared its message and its magic using a variety of tools-from posters to publisher lists, from bookmarks to websites, and from book lists to biographies. Our partners have included the National Literacy Secretariat of Human Resources Development Canada, the Canadian Library Association, and the Association pour l'avancement des sciences et des techniques de la documentation. This year we are featuring posters and book lists, with the support of Communication-Jeunesse and the Canadian Children's Book Centre. We would also like to thank this year's sponsor, the Canadian Federation of University Women.
