In May 1993, as part of an Inuit land claim, Brian Mulroney signed an agreement creating the new Northern territory of Nunavut, which came into being on April 1, 1999. Carved out of the Northwest Territories, with a population of 27 000, Nunavut covers an area twice as large as British Columbia. |
