Citizenship and Immigration

Until 1917, two federal departments -- Agriculture, followed by the Interior -- were responsible for immigration. In 1917, the Department of Immigration and Colonization was established. Since then, Immigration has existed as a separate department, except for the period from 1936 to 1949, when it was the responsibility of Mines and Resources.
Today, the Department is responsible for administering the Immigration Act and the Citizenship Act, and for developing immigration policy, managing immigration levels, and participating with other federal departments in developing related policy. It assists newly-arrived immigrants to adapt and settle in Canada and helps facilitate and control the admission to Canada of visitors, permanent residents and refugees. It is also authorized to guard against the entry of persons who may pose a danger to the health and safety of Canadians. Finally, it promotes the concept and values of Canadian citizenship to new immigrants and Canadians.
